Choosing Between a Solar Spotlight and a Solar Floodlight

Posted 4-27-2018 | Filed under Outdoor Lighting | Comments (0)

Choosing the best solar spot or flood light for your outdoor illumination project is a common necessity. Running electric to isolated spots can be tricky and expensive. Need to illuminate the small sign up the road directing patrons to your location? Trying to provide soft illumination to your backyard birdbath? This guide is designed to point you in the right direction.

Spot Light or Flood Light?

Clients are often unsure as to which product will work best for their application. We typically look at the following factors when determining which product best fits our client’s needs. What is the size of the subject matter you are looking to illuminate? How many hours of direct sunlight will that general area receive? (We recommended a minimum of 5 hours daily) Do you have a specific color temperature requirement? Once you have this data, you are ready to pick out your solar spot/flood light.

Spot Light Applications:

Spot lights typically feature a lower brightness output and limited beam spread, making them more affordable, but very effective for small applications. For example, our High Output Solar Spotlight features an output of 125 lumens (brightness), a color output of Cool white (color temperature), and an effective beam spread of about 6 feet. This item is great for illuminating small trees, 2-4-foot monuments and small signs of around 2-3 feet. Most applications larger than 4 feet, will require a flood light option. In certain cases, multiple spot lights can be just as effective as upgrading to a single large flood light.

Flood Light Applications:

Flood lights are notably brighter and feature a wide beam spread. They vary from small residential fixtures, up to large commercial kits, designed for billboards and large structures. Our most popular, not to mention reliable flood light, is our 108 SMD LED Solar Flood Light. It offers an output of 756 lumens and a cool white temperature output. This fixture is fantastic for signs and monuments starting at 5 feet, going up to around 20 feet. For larger applications and commercial options, we recommend looking at our Commercial Solar Sign Lights & Landscape Lighting Section. These high-end kits are designed with days of storage backup and substantial warranties, designed to operate perfectly, regardless of weather conditions.

Picking out the best solar fixture in a sea of products is not always an easy task. As long as you identify your requirements and stay within our recommended guidelines, you will find the perfect option for your application. As always, we are just a phone call away (877-548-3387) and are happy to offer our expertise.
